Flights and travel logistics for Vanuatu and Santo extensions

The current Abyss trips arrive in Port Vila on Efate and use ground transport toward Havannah Harbour. Vanuatu is a country of many islands, so flight and entry information for the exact traveller and itinerary must be checked again before tickets are issued.

How do I get from Sydney to the Moso dive area?

Abyss describes the direct Sydney–Port Vila flight as about three and a half hours when that service operates. From Port Vila Airport the group transfers by road to the Efate-side Havannah Harbour accommodation, then uses local boats for Moso-area diving. The flight time is not the full door-to-dive-base journey; final transfer timing depends on the confirmed flight and accommodation.

Do I need a domestic Vanuatu flight?

Not for the advertised Moso and Havannah dive program. Santo’s Coolidge and Tanna’s blue holes are on other islands and would require separate travel arrangements. If you want to add either destination, plan adequate connection and no-fly-after-diving time with the new operator before purchasing flights.

When can I book my Long Weekend flights?

The A$1,995 package does not include international flights. Pay attention to the specific instruction on the trip page: wait until Abyss confirms minimum numbers and Port Vila accommodation in writing and advises nominated flights. The included airport transfers relate to those nominated group flights; a different arrival may require a different arrangement.

Can I book my own New Year flights or a connection?

Return Sydney flights are part of the New Year package. The airline, schedule and baggage allowance are confirmed after ticketing, and the page says not to make separate or connecting arrangements yet. Discuss any origin outside Sydney, extension, accessibility need or alternate dates with the travel organiser before paying.

What documents do I need to enter Vanuatu?

Vanuatu Immigration lists a passport valid for more than six months on arrival, a return ticket and accommodation confirmation or local address for non-citizens. Visa rules depend on nationality and purpose of visit and may change. Check Vanuatu Immigration, your airline and the current Smartraveller advice for your passport; do not rely on a generic Beacon answer as entry approval.

Do Australian passport holders need a visa?

The precise visitor entitlement, duration and any conditions should be verified on current Vanuatu Immigration and Australian Smartraveller pages before travel. Rules for other passports differ. What currency and spending money should I bring?

Vanuatu uses the vatu (VT). Cards and ATMs are easier to find in Port Vila than in smaller communities, and cash helps with markets, local activity fees and personal spending. The two Abyss packages include different meals; budget for those not listed, drinks, optional activities and any rooming or equipment extras. Exchange rates and individual spending needs vary.

Will I have Wi-Fi or mobile coverage?

The New Year accommodation page specifically mentions Wi-Fi in communal areas; it does not promise a constant connection in every room or on the dive boat. Long Weekend connectivity is not specified in the published package. Ask the team or your mobile provider about the actual accommodation, roaming or local SIM options if staying online matters to you.

Can I extend the holiday to another island?

Abyss Vanuatu says it can tailor a Santo extension for SS President Coolidge diving; tell the team the number of extra days you want. A Port Vila–Santo flight takes roughly an hour, and flights, guides, accommodation and the return journey need separate prices and confirmation. For New Year, do not assume the included Sydney return flight can be changed. For the Long Weekend, discuss the extension before buying your separate international flights and plan no-fly intervals.

Could I fly to Santo on Monday after the Long Weekend?

Possibly. Air Vanuatu’s published domestic timetable currently shows a Monday Port Vila–Santo service at 14:00–14:50, subject to change and seat availability. If your final Sunday dive ends by 13:00, that example gives a 25-hour surface interval before takeoff; if the dive ends later or your dive computer or medical advice requires longer, discuss a Tuesday flight and a shorter Santo dive plan. The usual Monday Blue Hole outing may be shortened or missed to meet the airport check-in.

In this example, a Sunday 13:00 dive finish to Monday 14:00 takeoff is 25 hours, and a Thursday 13:00 finish to Saturday 09:00 takeoff is 44 hours. Those are arithmetic planning examples, not clearance for a particular dive profile. Flight times and availability can change; an onward Saturday international seat and fare have not been independently verified for this example. Can I combine Moso, the Coolidge and Tanna in a week?

It is physically possible to plan more than one island, but three dive regions in seven days leave few full dive days and expose the trip to domestic connection changes. The Coolidge alone can reward three or more dive days; Tanna requires another separately arranged flight. Choose one primary dive region if time is tight, or extend the holiday and build in transport and preflight surface intervals before buying tickets.

Should I book Santo and my international return flight on the same day?

A same-day connection is vulnerable to a late or cancelled domestic service. Smartraveller says domestic schedules can change or be suspended at short notice; Vanuatu Tourism recommends buffer days for outer-island travel. Plan a realistic buffer at Port Vila before a separate international ticket, and also comply with your dive computer and the recommended no-fly interval after the last dive. Ask your airline and insurer how a missed connection would be handled.

What if my independently booked flight misses the group airport pickup?

The Long Weekend includes transfers aligned with the nominated group flights, and the New Year package includes its ticketed flight and transfer plan. Contact the organiser promptly if your arrival changes. It can advise whether a new pickup or independent transfer is possible and what it would cost; the Beacon cannot promise that a vehicle can wait or that another flight is covered.

What are Air Vanuatu’s baggage limits for a Santo extension?

For a separately booked domestic flight between Port Vila and Santo, Air Vanuatu currently lists 10 kg of checked baggage and 5 kg of cabin baggage. These are separate allowances; a larger international allowance does not automatically apply. Confirm your ticket and the operating carrier’s current rules before booking. Excess baggage is subject to aircraft weight and acceptance and may be refused or carried later, so ask in advance about dive gear and consider hiring bulky equipment on Santo. Keep passport, essential medicines, certification and insurance details within the permitted cabin bag. The Moso Long Weekend itself uses a road transfer from Port Vila and needs no domestic flight.
