Who can dive Moso Island? Certification, juniors and refreshers
Abyss’s current Moso dive packages are for certified divers, including suitable Open Water divers. The local team chooses dives within each guest’s qualification, recent experience, medical status and comfort. An enquiry is the right route when any of those need checking before a deposit is paid.
Can a newly certified Open Water diver join?
Yes, a suitable new Open Water diver can enquire. The Long Weekend especially targets a supported first tropical holiday, with a pre-trip meeting and two settling-in dives. The team still needs to check when and where you qualified, your confidence with buoyancy, buddy and boat routines, and any required medical paperwork before confirming suitability.
Do I need PADI or is an equivalent certification accepted?
The Long Weekend page says Open Water Diver or a recognised equivalent. Tell Abyss the agency, level and last dives, and have proof of certification available. The trip team confirms recognition and individual readiness; a particular certification does not automatically qualify someone for all Moso sites or a deeper wreck.
Do I need a minimum number of logged dives?
The current product pages do not publish a fixed logged-dive minimum for all guests. They do ask about certification, recency and ability to manage the planned diving. Share your approximate number of dives and last-dive date with Abyss; the team may recommend a refresher or a few local dives before travel.
What if I have not dived for a year or feel rusty?
Tell Abyss your last-dive date before booking. The local operator says it dives in small groups and requires a private guide for the first dive when the break exceeds 12 months. It quotes an extra $100 for that guide; confirm the currency, what the fee covers and your booking’s final price in writing. A refresher or a few practice dives before travel can still help with comfort and skills; the private guide does not replace any training or medical clearance the team requires.
Can I join if I am not certified?
The advertised seven and ten guided dives require Open Water certification or a recognised equivalent; they are not Discover Scuba programs. If you want to join as a diver, ask about completing an Open Water course and enough further preparation before your chosen departure. A non-diver place is a separate question with departure-specific price and inclusions.
Can a junior diver or family join?
The current Long Weekend and New Year pages do not set out general child pricing, age eligibility or supervision arrangements. Ask Abyss before booking with a junior diver: certification limits, parental or guardian supervision, buddy plan, boat procedures, accommodation and package eligibility all need explicit confirmation for the particular departure.
Can my 12-to-15-year-old dive the same sites as an adult?
For PADI Junior Open Water divers aged 12–14, the usual maximum is 18 metres with a certified adult buddy; other age or training categories have their own limits. Abyss has not published junior places or a family price on its two currently featured departures. Send the child’s exact age, certification card and dive experience before choosing flights; Abyss and the local operator must confirm eligible sites, supervision and a boat place.
What if my certification limits me to 12 metres?
Tell Abyss before reserving. Abyss Vanuatu says it must confirm sites in advance for a guest limited to 12 metres, for example a PADI Scuba Diver or a younger Junior Open Water diver. Its advertised group dive packages specify Open Water or an equivalent as the standard entry level, so suitable shallow sites alone do not establish package eligibility. The team must confirm the qualification, supervision, depth plan and an available place for this specific departure.
What if I have a medical condition?
Complete the required screening honestly and get appropriate dive-medical advice or clearance where indicated. Abyss and the local operator assess whether the planned activity can be offered, but a Beacon cannot clear someone to dive. Raise a concern early, before flights or other non-refundable costs are committed, and confirm that your insurance covers the actual activity.
What if I want to stay shallower than the group?
Tell the trip team your comfortable depth and experience before travel, then repeat it during the briefing. Suitable shallow and mid-depth routes exist in the Moso region, but boat logistics and guide capacity must be planned. The operator can choose a suitable site or adjust an individual route; do not assume every site or boat schedule supports every requested profile.
Can I come without my own buddy?
Yes. Abyss Vanuatu says it can find you a suitable dive buddy, and the trip pages welcome solo travellers. Normal buddy procedures still apply underwater. Tell the team if you are travelling alone or have a particular experience concern; a buddy pairing and a twin-share room match are different arrangements and each needs confirmation.
What should I tell Abyss so it can recommend a trip?
Share your certification agency and level, rough number of logged dives, last dive, comfort with boats and currents, preferred dates, departure city, rooming needs and whether a companion dives. Add any gear-hire or medical paperwork question. That gives the team enough to discuss a realistic plan without treating a warm-water destination as one uniform dive.
