First Vanuatu dive trip: readiness, solo travel, gear and planning

Considering your first overseas dive holiday around Moso Island? You do not need to solve every detail on your own. “I don’t know whether I’m ready to dive in Vanuatu.”

The current Moso dive holidays are for certified Open Water divers or recognised equivalents, subject to individual suitability. An instructor can review your certification, approximate number of dives, last dive, comfort with buoyancy and boat routines, and any medical paperwork required. A warm-water destination does not make every site suitable for every diver.

If you are rusty, the practical answer may be a Sydney refresher or a supported local dive before travel. The Long Weekend is designed with guided diving and two settling-in dives before its planned night dive. Abyss Vanuatu says that a diver who has not dived for more than 12 months needs a private guide for the first dive at an extra charge; confirm the current amount and arrangement before booking. An instructor can tell you whether preparation, a different trip or a particular dive plan makes more sense. No article or Beacon answer can give medical clearance.

“I would be travelling alone. Who will I dive and stay with?”

You are welcome to enquire without bringing a dive buddy. Abyss Vanuatu can arrange a suitable buddy pairing for the diving, with normal buddy procedures. On the Long Weekend, a Sydney-based Abyss instructor travels with the group on the nominated flights, leads a pre-trip meeting at Ramsgate and supports the group in Vanuatu; the named leader is confirmed for each departure.

A dive buddy and a shared room are separate arrangements. Tell us whether you are happy to share, have a rooming preference or would need a single room. Abyss will confirm a possible twin-share match or any single-room option and supplement for your departure before you commit; a room match is not guaranteed merely because you are travelling solo.

“I do not own dive gear. What can I hire?”

Tanks and weights are included in the current advertised Moso dive packages. Other personal dive equipment can be arranged for hire, but the items, fit plan, availability and price need to be confirmed for your departure. Tell Abyss what you already have and what you need, including wetsuit and BCD sizes, mask, fins and boots, regulator and computer. Ask where and when gear will be fitted and checked. You do not need to buy a complete kit just to make a first trip possible.

Some guests may qualify for a stated equipment-hire offer; do not assume it applies to every booking or covers every item. Request an itemised written hire plan and total before paying. Sydney rental prices should not be used as a quote for Vanuatu.

“I do not understand flights, baggage, transfers or when to book.”

Start with the exact departure, because inclusions differ. The Vanuatu Long Weekend is a land-only package: international flights are separate, while nominated Port Vila airport transfers and an Abyss trip leader are included. Wait for Abyss’s written confirmation that the group and accommodation are secured before booking the nominated flights. The 2026–27 New Year Adventure currently includes return Sydney flights and airport transfers; its final flight schedule and baggage allowance are confirmed through that booking.

A practical sequence is: choose the trip and check dive suitability; confirm the room, equipment and full inclusions; review the deposit and booking terms; follow the departure’s flight-booking instructions; then arrange suitable travel insurance, check passport and entry requirements, complete medical forms, and review baggage and packing rules with the actual airline. The Moso base is reached by road from Port Vila, without a Santo domestic flight. Ask the team to walk through the steps for your departure and city of origin rather than relying on a generic flight example.

“The dates or complete cost do not work for me.”

Ask for the complete price for your circumstances before deciding: package, flights if excluded, gear hire, rooming or single supplement, insurance, meals and drinks outside the inclusions, baggage, any local charges and optional activities. Availability, promotions and fares can change, so the live trip page and a written quote for your departure take priority over an older example.

If the date or total genuinely does not suit you, tell Abyss your preferred travel window and budget. The team can discuss a suitable later departure if one is available, or record what you need and respond when a matching trip exists. More reassurance cannot fix an unsuitable date or price.

What happens in a short planning conversation?

Tell us your main hesitation in your own words. For readiness, share your certification, approximate logged dives and last dive so an instructor can suggest a sensible preparation step. For solo travel, ask about the escort, buddy and rooming separately. For gear, list what you need to hire and your sizes. For travel, say where you are departing from and which step is confusing. For dates or cost, give a realistic window and budget so we can check an actual fit.

The aim is a clear next step: a suitable departure, one useful preparation dive, a written gear or travel plan, or an honest answer that the current trip does not fit. A conversation does not reserve a place; the confirmed trip terms and availability govern a booking.

Vanuatu-specific preparation before you commit

Why choose the Abyss Vanuatu Long Weekend if I would otherwise travel alone?

The Long Weekend is a four-night, seven-dive group trip around Moso Island and Havannah Harbour, with a maximum of 12 divers. An Abyss instructor travels with the group from Sydney on the nominated flights, hosts a Ramsgate pre-trip meeting and supports the group in Vanuatu. The team arranges an appropriate dive buddy from the group, so you do not have to find one before booking. Guided settling-in dives, included group airport transfers, four breakfasts and four dinners remove much of the first-trip organising. A twin-share room match is a separate arrangement and must be confirmed; tell Abyss if you would prefer a single room and ask for its price. The package is land-only, so international flights and personal gear hire still need their own plan.

Do I need a visa, and what entry documents should I check?

Australian passport holders are on Vanuatu Immigration’s visitor-visa-exempt list and may obtain tourist entry on arrival if they meet the current criteria. Check your own nationality rather than assuming the same rule applies to every traveller. Vanuatu Immigration lists a passport valid for more than six months on arrival, a return ticket and accommodation confirmation or a local address. Keep the confirmed trip and return flight details accessible. Check Vanuatu Immigration and your airline again before departure, especially if you hold another passport, are transiting another country or intend to stay beyond the group trip.

What are the baggage limits if I add a domestic flight to Santo?

Moso diving uses a road transfer from Port Vila and does not require a domestic flight. A separate Santo extension does. Air Vanuatu currently publishes 10 kg of checked baggage and 5 kg of cabin baggage for its domestic services, including Port Vila–Santo. These are separate limits, not a pooled 15 kg allowance. Confirm the exact allowance on your ticket and with the operating airline because services and conditions can change. An international flight’s larger allowance does not automatically carry over to a separately ticketed domestic flight. Excess baggage is subject to aircraft weight and airline acceptance; it may be refused or travel on a later service. Ask about excess gear before buying the Santo flight rather than assuming a fee guarantees carriage.

How should I pack dive equipment for Moso and a Santo extension?

Check both the international and domestic tickets, then weigh your packed bags at home. Tanks and weights are included on the advertised Moso trips; confirm which personal equipment you will hire, where it will be fitted and its written price. If adding Santo, ask the Santo operator what can be hired there so you can avoid carrying bulky gear over the domestic 10 kg checked limit. Keep your passport, certification proof, essential medication, insurance details and small valuable dive items such as a mask or computer in cabin baggage only within the airline’s 5 kg and battery rules. Pack wet gear in a separate bag and allow time to dry it before flying. Never assume a dive cylinder or battery may travel without airline approval.

How much cash in vatu should I carry?

There is no fixed amount that every diver needs. For the four-night Long Weekend, a practical starting personal-spending float is about VT15,000–25,000 per person if you expect to buy lunches, drinks and small extras; you may use less, and optional tours, taxis, souvenirs, local fees or a Santo extension can raise the total. The current Long Weekend package includes four breakfasts and four dinners, so ask Abyss for a departure-specific list of what remains payable and whether any reef contribution or gear hire is collected in cash. Bring small vatu notes, a usable bank card and a backup payment method. Port Vila and Luganville have ATMs, but smaller communities and remote outings may not; withdraw what you need before leaving town. Do not carry your entire holiday budget on the boat.

What travel insurance do I need for Vanuatu scuba diving?

The Long Weekend requires travel insurance covering scuba diving, overseas medical treatment, cancellation and emergency evacuation; it is a separate cost. Before paying the deposit, ask the insurer to confirm in writing that the policy covers the exact trip dates, guided multiple-day and night diving, your planned maximum depth, and any existing medical conditions. If you add Santo, separately ask about the Coolidge’s planned depth, wreck diving or penetration if relevant, and the domestic flights and separate-ticket connection. Check exclusions, excesses, treatment and recompression costs, evacuation, delayed baggage and cancellation. A credit-card policy or a generic adventure-sport label is not proof of suitable diving cover. Smartraveller notes that Vanuatu’s only hyperbaric chamber is in Port Vila and serious care may require evacuation.

What medical and mosquito precautions should I take?

Book a travel-doctor or travel-clinic appointment ideally 6–12 weeks before departure. Discuss your itinerary, routine and destination-specific vaccinations, existing conditions, prescription medicines and whether a dive-medical review is needed. Ask specifically whether malaria prevention medication is appropriate if you will visit Santo or other northern islands: Smartraveller reports malaria particularly in Sanma, Penama and Torba provinces. Dengue and other mosquito-borne illness can also occur on Efate, so use repellent, protective clothing and suitable accommodation precautions. Bring enough properly labelled medication for the trip and possible delays, with prescription documentation where needed. Is the SS President Coolidge part of the Long Weekend?

No. The seven guided dives are around Moso, Havannah Harbour and suitable nearby Efate sites. Santo and the Coolidge require a separately priced extension, domestic flights, accommodation and a Santo dive plan matched to your certification, recent experience and comfort. Discuss the extension before buying international flights. Allow for the restrictive domestic baggage limit, possible schedule changes, a buffer before a separately ticketed international connection and an appropriate no-fly interval after your last dive. The trip team and your dive computer must assess the actual dive and flight schedule; a sample itinerary is not personal clearance.

What if weather, a flight change or delayed baggage disrupts the plan?

The local skipper selects sites to suit conditions and the group; a named site or wildlife sighting is not promised. The Abyss leader can help the group coordinate a changed schedule, but flight costs, missed connections, alternative activities and refunds depend on the confirmed booking terms and insurance. The Long Weekend’s included airport transfers are aligned to nominated group flights; tell Abyss promptly if you travel independently or a flight changes. For Santo, domestic flights and international returns may be separate tickets, so leave a sensible connection buffer. Keep essentials in your permitted cabin bag and ask the team in advance what rental gear could bridge a delayed checked bag.

What should I do before paying and before departure?

First tell Abyss your certification, last dive, main hesitation, preferred departure, rooming and gear needs. Ask for an optional short planning conversation focused on that concern and a written confirmation of trip fit, inclusions, full price and any preparation step. Check your passport and entry requirements; review the booking terms and take suitable insurance when cancellation risk begins. Then follow Abyss’s written instructions for the nominated flights; do not purchase separate Long Weekend flights before the departure is confirmed. In the final fortnight, check the operating airline’s baggage and battery rules, bring your certification and medical paperwork, arrange vatu and a card, attend the pre-trip meeting and save the leader’s contact details offline.
